Sorry, Boys, This Is Our Domain by Stephanie Rosenbloom

It has turned out to be that nowadays the youngest internet users are girls. Blogs, graphics, photographs and web designs are mostly published by girls ranging from ages of 12 to 17.  For a long time computers have been considered a “male thing”, something that appears to be declining over time.

Recent studies have supported this argument. When it comes to posting profiles or building web sites and using the web, the gap between boys and girls is largely widening with the girls making up the most percentage.

An explanation to that appeared that most boys are too impatient to put up with those kinds of work. Indeed posting glitters, layouts and such requires a great deal of creativity and persistence. It can be hard work.

Although, this “girl rule” drift does not follow in the computer industry where only twenty seven percent of women have a computer related profession. Some scholars say that it is because of the lack of inspiration in the teaching of the courses. There are very few women that have majored computer science, the role models are inadequate.

Other scholars have noticed that girls probably are more apt to use what is already available to them rather than inventing new technologies. According to Pat Gill, the reason of girls outnumbering in web designed and such rather than actually go into the scientific field deals with the early stereotypes. “Girls have learned to consider themselves as objects.”

Girls would master the arts; decorations photography etc… and be social and expansive in concurrence to earlier assumption. They would be better at talking about themselves, hence their interest in web designs and profile settings.

Boys on the other part do not have time for such creativity works. They would much rather post videos and pictures that impress others. They do not express themselves as girls would do. Their common video posting are about their accomplishments. It is not uncommon to see guys’ postings of their latest or greatest skateboarding stunts, their incredible lacrosse or football game. They would capture their best block as a goalie and share it with the rest of the world. They want people to be astounded by them not to be reading their feelings and emotions on the internet. They would probably consider that as a “girl thing”.

They say that they do not have time for those types of thing: the designing and such and yet the boys would post an infinite number of pictures and videos of their latest exploit or spectacular act.

Posting videos have turned out to be the “guy thing” although it does not mean that the girls do not have any idea of how to do so. In the contrary, they master such ability quite good as well.

Whether it is because of lack or patience or because they just don’t have a clue, girls are outnumbering guys in that field. And whether that envisages more females in the computer science field for the years to come is unsure. We would just have to wait and see.
